Dachshund

Beaded dachshund

Today we will make another beaded dog; it is a dachshund.
We will need:
- size 10 seed beads of brown and black colors;
- wire 0.2 mm thick;
- thin nylon fishing line and a needle for cross-linking of the finished beadwork (if necessary).

To weave a dachshund we will use the technique of three-dimensional beading. We met such a beading technique in our tutorials many times, so you can learn the basics of three-dimensional beading in this and this tutorials.

The main idea of three-dimensional beading is that each row in the beadwork consists of two tiers which are situated one above the other. So, at first we make the upper tier of the 1st row, then make the lower tier of the 1st row, after that make the the upper tier of the 2nd row, next make the lower tier of the 2nd row and so on.
Now the upper tiers of beads will form the upper side of the dog’s head and then its back, and the lower tiers of beads will form the lower side of the dog’s head and then its tummy.

Let’s start weaving. Take a wire 150 cm long and string onto it 1 black bead for the upper tier of the 1st row and then 2 brown beads for the lower tier of the 1st row. Place the set of beads on the middle of the wire.

Take the end of the wire that comes out from the black bead and cross it through all the brown beads.

Tighten the wires trying to keep the beads on the middle of the wire. We’ve got two tiers of the 1st row. The upper tier consists of one black bead and the lower tier consists of two brown beads.

Then make the upper tier of the 2nd row. String 3 brown beads onto any end of the wire

and cross the other end of the wire through all these beads.

Tighten the wire and bend it placing the beads above the lower tier of the 1st row.

Side view at this stage:

Next, make the lower tier of the 2nd row. String 4 brown beads onto any end of the wire

and cross the other end of the wire through all these beads.

Tighten the wire and bend it placing the beads below the upper tier of the current row.

Side view at this stage:

All the other rows make in the same way.

3rd row:
The upper tier: 4 brown beads.
The lower tier: 5 brown beads.

Side view at this stage:

4th row:
The upper tier: 7 brown beads.
The lower tier: 5 brown beads.

5th row:
For the upper tier string the beads in the following sequence: 2 brown, 1 black, 2 brown, 1 black, 2 brown.
The lower tier: 5 brown beads.

For further weaving use brown beads only.

6th row:
The upper tier: string 10 beads onto any end of the wire, cross the other end of the wire through them and then slightly pull the ends of the wire but do not tighten them at the moment.

Take an additional piece of wire 20 cm long and pass it through the 4 middle beads of the current tier.

Tighten the basic wire and continue weaving on it. We will use the additional wire later, for weaving the ears of the dachshund.

Next, make the lower tier of the 6th row: 5 beads.

7th row:
The upper tier: string 10 beads onto any end of the wire, cross the other end of the wire through them and then slightly pull the ends of the wire but do not tighten them at the moment. Through the 6 middle beads of the current tier pass an additional piece of wire of 20 cm in length.

Tighten the basic wire and continue weaving on it. We will use the additional wire later, for weaving the ears of the dachshund.

Next, make the lower tier of the 7th row: 4 beads.

Side view at this stage:

Now make the ears using the additional wires in the upper tiers of the 6th and 7th rows. Both ears are identical, weave them using the technique of flat parallel weaving and the following pattern:

1st row: 2 beads. String them onto any wire and cross the other wire through them.

After that carefully tighten the wires trying not to pull out the wires at the other side of the dachshund’s head.

Continue weaving the ear.
2nd row: 3 beads.

3rd row: 3 beads.
4th row: 3 beads.
5th row: 2 beads.

Secure the wires. Pass any wire through the beads of the penultimate row of the ear,

then twist together both wires and trim them.

Bend the tip of the wire and hide it between the rows of beads.

In the same way make the other ear.

Next, continue making the body of the dachshund.

8th row:
The upper tier: 9 beads.
The lower tier: 6 beads.

9th row:
The upper tier: 7 beads.
The lower tier: 9 beads.

10th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 11 beads.

11th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.

For the lower tier string 13 beads onto any end of the wire, cross the other end of the wire through them and then slightly pull the ends of the wire but do not tighten them at the moment. Through the 5 middle beads of the current tier pass one more additional piece of wire of 30 cm in length.

Tighten the basic wire and continue weaving on it. We will use the additional wire later, for weaving the forepaws of the dachshund.

12th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 13 beads.

13th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: string 13 beads onto any end of the wire, cross the other end of the wire through them and then slightly pull the ends of the wire but do not tighten them at the moment. Through the 5 middle beads of the current tier pass an additional piece of wire of 30 cm in length.

Tighten the basic wire and continue weaving on it. We will use the additional wire later, for weaving the forepaws of the dachshund.

Continue weaving.

14th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 13 beads.

15th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 12 beads.

16th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 11 beads.

17th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 10 beads.

18th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 10 beads.

19th row
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 9 beads.

20th row:
The upper tier: 6 beads.
The lower tier: 8 beads. Through the 4 middle beads of the current tier pass an additional piece of wire of 30 cm in length. We will use this additional piece of wire later, for weaving the hind paws of the dachshund.

Side view at this stage:

21st row:
The upper tier: 5 beads.
The lower tier: 7 beads.

22nd row:
In the upper tier we will make the tail of the dachshund. String onto any end of the wire 11 beads (if the ends of the wire are of different length an this moment, choose the longer one)

and, holding the last added bead, pass this end of the wire backwards through the next 8 beads.

Move all the beads of the last set close to the beadwork and pull this end of the wire tight. The last added 9 beads have formed the dog’s tail.

Then string onto the same end of the wire 2 beads

and cross the other end of the wire through 4 beads of the current tier, passing by the beads of the tail.

Tighten the wire. We’ve got the upper tier of the 22nd row.

Continue weaving and make the lower tier of the 22nd row; it consists of 6 beads.

23rd row is the last row in the dachshund’s body:
The upper tier: 2 beads.
The lower tier: 1 bead.

Weaving of the body is finished. We will use the rest of the basic wire for making hind paws of the dachshund. That is why we should lead the ends of the wire so that they come out from the lower tier of the 22nd (penultimate) row. To make so, take any end of the wire and pass it through the 2 extreme beads of the lower tier of the 22nd row in upward direction.

Then make the same with the other end of the basic wire. Pass it through the 2 extreme beads at the other side of the lower tier of the 22nd row.

Next, make paws. For the forepaws use additional wires in 11th and 13th rows. For the hind paws use an additional wire in 20th row and the rest of the basic wire. Straighten all the wires and pull them so that they are of the equal length at both sides.

For weaving all the paws use the technique of three-dimensional beading.

Make each forepaw using the following pattern:

1st row:
The upper tier: 2 beads.
The lower tier: 2 beads.

2nd row:
The upper tier: 2 beads.
The lower tier: 2 beads.

3rd row:
The upper tier: 1 bead.
The lower tier: 2 beads.

4th row: only the upper tier - 3 beads.

Secure the wires. Pass any wire through the beads of the lower tier of the 3rd row,

then twist together both wires and trim them.

Bend the tip of the wire and hide it between the rows of beads.

In the same way make the other forepaw.

Next, make hind paws. For the each hind paw use the following pattern:

1st row:
The upper tier: 3 beads.
The lower tier: 3 beads.

2nd row:
The upper tier: 3 beads.
The lower tier: 3 beads.

3rd row:
The upper tier: 2 beads.
The lower tier: 2 beads.

4th row:
The upper tier: 2 beads.
The lower tier: 2 beads.

5th row: only the upper tier - 3 beads.

Secure the wires the same way as with the wires of the forepaws and then make the other hind paw.

Weaving of the dachshund is finished. If there are big gaps between the rows of beads, you may need to sew the figure with a thin fishing line. To do so, use the technique of cross-linking which is described in detail here or here. You should sew only the body and the head of the dachshund. It is not necessary to sew the ears and paws.

My dachshund came out tough enough and I didn’t sew it.

The beaded dachshund is finished!
